Kitchen Bargins, Poker & Ubuntu

Friday, July 21st, 2006

Last weekend consisted of buying appliances for our new kitchen, playing poker and installing ubuntu. Mel and I bought a dishwasher, oven, cooktop and range hood for about $3000. We should be getting our kitchen installed in October sometime. Saturday, Troy was down from Sydney. We got together with Troja, Snowy and Steve and played some Texas hold’em at Steve’s in Sunbury. It was the first time I had played poker, and it was pretty good fun, I won a few hands. Mel came round too, and won the game. Sunday I started the transistion from Fedora Core 5 to Ubuntu. Ubuntu seems to just work. I’ve decided that I am over the challenge of getting things to work on Fedora Core and that I should be more focused on getting things done, rather than getting my operating system to work properly. Ubuntu updates seem to be more stable. Fedora Core kernel updates seem to keep breaking configurations, especially with display settings. I have now converted most of my existing setup over to Ubuntu, including my webserver, cvs repositry and samba services. It is all good. I have also finished editing video from last weeks snow trip. More Snow

Thursday, July 13th, 2006

Ok, there was more skiing this weekend. Mt Hotham, as usual, is a not the best destination for a day trip. 10 hours in the car for 7 hours snow-time. Unfortunately we had to fit chains to the car, and my dad’s 1960 chains didn’t fit Snowy’s XR6 to well, so we had to hire chains half way up the mountain for about 4 times the usual price. Hotham turned on the snow nearly all day, which kept the runs lightly dusted. Unfortunately there were only 6 runs open, but we still kept ourselves busy. Check out the photos here. I’ve got some more video footage, but not too much as I didn’t want my camera out in the snow too long. I’ll post some video up here when Snowy gives my my camera back. My bullet camera (from dogcam) has arrived, just need to pick it up from the post office. Hopefully I’ll have a chance to film some crazy head-footage on the weekend.

Snow

Heres some video from the snow. Unfortunately its hard to see how fast I am actually moving. I’ll order my bullet cam for the next weekend I go to the snow. This footage was just filmed by holding the camera out in front of me, hopefully a bullet cam will be a lot more stable. At least i’ll be able to go faster. Please forgive the “standard” action sound track.

Birthday

Sunday, July 2nd, 2006

It’s my birthday tomorrow so, I had a few drinks at the Quiet Man in Kensington. We were prematurely ejected from the eating area cause some old guy died in there. But we managed to continue to drink in the front bar, before we headed down to the newly refurbished Geebung, which is now called something else. Very hip, even have their own Vee-Jay. On Monday night Mel, Jacqui and I went to the city in the middle of the night to watch the soccer with lots of other soccer fans, of which most were drunken 15 year olds. To everyones disappointment Italy scored in the last 2 seconds.. I had never heard so many people be so quiet, just gaping at the screen in astonishment. I took some photos on my camera, I’ll post them up here when I get a chance. Tomorrow I am off to the snow, so I’ll blog again soon, with some spectacular videos.. hopefully..
