Aloha.

So what’s happening? I have been up to the usual stuff the last few weeks. Working etc. Went to a Sybase IQ presentation this morning, fairly interesting. Sybase IQ is especially designed for BI access, uses some crazy data storage method which allows for super fast indexing and compression. Other exciting news is that the big-ass hole that was left in our wall after we removed our heater is now patched up – Dad and I patched it up with some plaster. Steve and I have open-sourced our development boxes at work. Steve began installing FreeBSD last week. I think it took him 3 days to get everything installed. I decided to install Ubuntu this afternoon. I think it took about an hour to fully install, ready for development. This weekend is another snow weekend. I think theres 6 or 7 of us going to Falls Creek this Sunday. The snow is slowly melting, hopefully there is enough. I think this will be our last opportunity for snowboarding this season. Its nearly Spring, it’ll be back to the mountain bike and climbing for me.

Turns

Last weekend was Snow trip weekend with Fishie, Danners , Snowy and Milk. We drove to Mt Beauty on Saturday night and drove up to Falls Creek Sunday morning. It was Bluebird when we got there, and it was awesome. We were all of similar standard so we could shoot through the ski runs without having to wait for slow pokes. In the afternoon the clouds rolled in and there was nearly a white out. The clouds also brought the temperature down a little too, plus a breeze came up which added to the chill factor. The next morning we returned to Falls again. This time it was Bluebird and stayed that way all day. This trip also gave me a chance to use my Dogcam, which captured some awesome footage of us all barrelling down the mountain. Check out some of the footage here. I recorded about 2.5 gig of footage each day, which equates to about 50 minutes each day. I think that with two 2 gig chips I might be able to record every run of th day. I might have to invest in another one.
Before the trip I also managed to connect my Ubuntu laptop to the CDMA packet network via my Nokia 6255. I thought it might be handy for getting the snow information from the net before we went up on Monday, but it turned out that Milk had his work’s CDMA internet card anyway.

Too Much Happening

Not much time to blog these days, lots of things happening. An engagement in Riddells Creek, a new Ubuntu server in the datacenter, database migration to Progress OpenEdge 10.1A, new Dogcam videos, ski trip and lots of code. Went to Dave and Katherines engagement on at the Riddell Pub. Dave is one of the guys I commute with on the train every morning. At work we have just migrated our production server to a new 2RU Dell server running Ubuntu. It also allowed us to upgrade our database server to OpenEdge 10.1A from Progress 9.1. The snow has started falling, and five of us are driving up to Falls and Hotham on the weekend. Sweet. I have been coding some software for Mel, its coming along fairly nicely… and I have used my DogCam for the first time. Check it out here. (The FLV is fairly pixelly. I have uploaded the original MPEG to Google Video, so it may look better there – check it out here)..
